No time to go to market early in the morning? No problem, you can still do your shopping in the afternoon until early evening in Pasar Batu Lanchang. This indoor wet market is housed in a two-storey market complex. Located in Lintang Batu Lanchang, it caters to the community in the Batu Lanchang area and the neighbouring Gelugor area. it is one of the only two afternoon markets in the island, the other one being the Cecil Street Market. It is ideal for those who want or need to buy their fresh produce after working hours.
Pasar Batu Lanchang opens from one in the afternoon until seven in the evening. Some vendors close their stalls a little earlier, or later, perhaps as and when needed. Just like some of the market buildings, the wet market is located at the ground floor. The size of the market is just nice, not big nor too small. The stalls are well-organised so it is easy to navigate. On the other hand, the upper floor serves as a community hall. It is suitable for organizing several activities like wedding or banquet. It can also be used for badminton game.
There are 2 entrances to the market. From the main entrance, you will find fresh vegetables of different kinds. On the left side you will see retail goods, fish balls, tofu and other ingredients for soup dishes. At the middle section is as variety of fruits and moving to the back is the poultry section. Located on the right side of the market are the fishes and seafood section, and the beef and lamb section. There is a separate small area for non-halal meat or pork. It is located at the back on the right side of the market.
Parking is not a problem in this market as there is an allotted parking space for the wet market and the adjacent Batu Lanchang Hawker Centre where you can get to taste local hawker food. This hawker centre opens from one in the afternoon until around 6:30 in the evening. Among the favourites here are the Nyonya kuih, Char Koay Kak, Chee Chong Fan and Ice Kacang. Also, don’t forget to try Char Koay Teow with Duck Egg, Mee Rebus, Pasembur and the Mee Goreng.
Just like the some of the markets, Batu Lanchang market is also equipped with a Bio-Regen Instant Food Conversion Unit, equipment used to turn food waste into liquid and pipe them into holding tanks. This is part of the government’s zero waste campaign.
