The Bayan Baru Market is a 2-storey building that serves as a wet market and community hall that caters for the community of Bayan Baru. Officially called Kompleks Pasar dan Balai Rakyat Bayan Baru or Bayan Baru Market Complex and Community Hall, it is the largest market in the municipality and was established by the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP). Its inauguration was officiated by Penang Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon on the 25th of May 2001.
Located at Jalan Mayang Pasir 3, Bayan Baru wet market is situated between Sunshine Square and the Bayan Baru Mosque. It is also surrounded by major establishments like the Bayan Baru Hawker Centre, Suntech @ Penang Cybercity and One Precint.
Prior to the renovation of the market in 2000, the original layout of the Bayan Baru wet market had humble beginnings with only basic structures. It has been expanded and renovated over the years to cater for the growing population.
Now, the stalls are set in 2 levels. In front of the market at the first level is the wet section with fish, seafood and vegetables. The poultry and beef sections are located at the back. On the right side, near the entryway are the fruits and retail sections. The non-halal section is on the most right part of the market near the Bayan Baru Hawker Centre.
There is a lift near the stairs leading to the upper level where you can find general merchandise stores and tailor-made clothing. The library, meeting rooms, office, foyer and kindergarten are also found on the second level. The Bayan Baru Community Hall is suitable for organizing various events such as wedding receptions, dinners and for playing badminton.
There is ample parking space surrounding the market and the hawker centre and in Sunshine Square as well, so parking is not a problem. The MPPP has strict guidelines prohibiting vendors outside the market to maintain cleanliness and order in the premises.
The neighbouring Bayan Baru hawker Centre is considered as one of the biggest food courts on the island. Very spacious and well-ventilated, the hawker centre is divided in different sections for Chinese, Malay and Indian hawkers. It is open from morning till night. Many shoppers from the wet market stop over here for breakfast. Although many stalls open late to cater for the lunch crowd, there are still plenty of favourites to choose from for breakfast in the morning.
With more than a hundred of stalls to choose from, you get to choose from a variety of local foods and even international delights. Some of the favourites here are the Hokkien mee, curry mee, char koay teow, Singapore beehoon and nasi kandar. Drinks like the red bean ice blended, kopi and fruit juices are also popular.
