D’ Place for Everyone!

BJ ComplexKompleks Bukit Jambul, or otherwise known as BJ Complex, is a 9-storey complex in Bayan Lepas that is renowned for its affordable prices and a favourite destination for the latest wide range of computers and hand phone technology in the market. It is also known for hosting charity and other large-scale events.

Ideally located at Jalan Rumbia off Jalan Tun Dr Awang, in growing satellite township of Bayan Baru, the mall is surrounded by exclusive resort condominiums, high class residential area and the middle and low class locality. It is conveniently accessible through public transport by Rapid Penang buses plying the area.

BJ Complex was opened to public in May 1997 and was positioned as the largest upmarket shopping mall with a total built-up area of 1.1 million sqft. It was anchored by Cosmart Hypermarket and Looking Good Department Store, together with other big tenants like Toys R Us, Popular Bookshop and Reject Shop.

During the 2008 financial crisis, many businesses shut down including their anchor Looking Good, which also affected the complex as they could not find a replacement. Without an anchor tenant, crowd became lesser and other outlets had to leave. The loss of big names like Cosmart, Coffee Bean, DeliFrance and Toys R Us led to loss of middle-class market, and tighter competition further led to losing the mall’s lustre.

In 2009, Bukit Jambul Complex enticed Kamdar Department Store, followed by Mydin. These helped the complex get back on track but now with a different market.

To date, BJ Complex houses more than 400 shops including popular international brands like McDonald’s, KFC, Popular and Watsons. There is also a supermarket, amusement centre, movie theatre and a bowling alley.

The mall is less than 15 minutes’ drive from Penang Bridge so even shoppers from the mainland and other Northern states have easy access to it.
