Campbell Street Market or Pasar Jalan Campbell is a Victorian-style marketplace located at the junction of Carnavon Street and Campbell Street. Set within the UNESCO World Heritage Site in George Town, this wet market was built in the 1900s. The building spreads until Pesara Claimant. It was established by the municipal government along with the police station at the back, and was originally known as Carnavon Street Market.
Campbell Street Market opens from early in the morning until noontime. During this time, the small market stalls spill along Carnavon Street until Lebuh Chulia. It has separate sections for seafood, poultry, meat, fruits and vegetables. You can buy live chickens and have them butchered and cut according to your preference. The freshly-caught seafood usually arrives in the wee hours of the morning so it is best to reach there as early as 7am to get the freshest batch. Some vendors pack up as early as 11am.
Just like the Chowrasta, the less-busy Campbell Street Market is also a community market in the George Town city centre supplying its surrounding population. Additionally, although Chowrasta was built earlier in the 1890s, this wet market has retained its original architecture including its brick facade, the arch window at the pediment, the ornate cast iron columns and brackets. Thus, this market is the oldest of its kind in George Town. The schedule upgrade for the market is in late 2016.
Aside from the wet market, patrons also visit Campbell Street for hearty local breakfasts. There are shops lined up within the area which serve favourites like pork tripe porridge (chee cheong chok), curry mee, clear noodle soup (qing tang mee), lam mee or birthday noodle soup and the braised beef wantan mee.
There are hawker stalls found on the narrow way of Carnavon Street selling economy fried beehoon, kuih, and soya bean. Some of the well-known restaurants here are the Tek Sen, Yee Hong and the Sai Lam.
Surrounding the market are many little sundry shops selling clothing and other sundry items. Aside from that, Campbell Street is popular for jewelleries, gold and wholesale selling of apparels.
