Dato Kramat Market is a small, old market located along Jalan Air Itam, near the junction of Jalan York. The area is commonly known by the Hokkiens as “Si Kham Tiam” which means four shop houses. There is limited information as to which are these four shop houses where the place got its name. Nonetheless, this morning market serves the community around the vicinity.
With more than 60 years of existence, this once a lively wet market shows obvious wears and tears. There are only a few stalls operating selling vegetables, eggs, canned goods, spices, fresh coconut milk, and other dry ingredients. At the back, there’s a stall selling beef and on the side there’s a stall selling chicken. According to one of the vendors, the wet market used to be full of stalls selling various fresh produce and has many regular buyers. It started to lose customers when the fish vendor retired from selling due to old age. No one has come to take his place in the market. Shoppers usually go to market to buy fish, and then buy vegetables, fruits and other ingredients. So without any fish vendor, buyers just go to other markets where they can buy all the things they need in one place.
The vendors have reported the case to the Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang (MPPP), but there has been no replacement in at least five years. Hopefully the problem can be remedied soon; otherwise, the remaining vendors will also leave the market and Dato Kramat Market will continue to deteriorate.
Located adjacent to the market is the Masjid Jamek Shaik Eusoff. Next to it is a small mamak shop selling curries and Indian food. The Nasi Kandar Sulaiman is at the corner of Jalan Air Itam and Jalan Tramway. If you like dimsum, you can walk a bit farther to Xin Ji De Shi Hong Kong Dimsum along Jalan Air Itam.
At the opposite street, there is a big furniture shop and a tailor shop, among others. If you’re looking for shoe repair, you can check out the uncle at the bus stop.
