Desa Mayang Market, otherwise known as Pasar Bukit Gedung, is the main market serving the community in Bukit Gedung, Bayan Baru. It comprises a wet and dry market, as well as a hawker centre. Its structural design is the same with the Bayan Baru Market and is second biggest next to it in Bayan Baru. Desa Mayang Market is situated along Persiaran Mayang Pasir, approximately less than 10 minutes away from the Penang International Airport.
Lined outside the market, there are sections for chicken, beef, fish and seafood, fresh santan or coconut milk, vegetables, fruits, eggs and other dry foods.
On the other side of the building, you will find the hawker centre selling mostly Malay and Indian hawker foods like Nasi Lemak, Sandwiches, kuih-muih, Mee Hoon, Cucur Udang, Mee Ekonomi, Laksa, Bihun Sup and Thai Kebab. Light meals are also available like aneka jenis roti, Roti Hot Dog Roll, Roti Bakar, Murtabak and Karipap. There are stalls selling Ice Kachang, Cendol, and a variety of drinks and refreshments.
The hawker centre is usually busy early in the morning as market goers and residents in the area come here to enjoy a hearty breakfast. Behind the market there is a big green field where you may chance upon seeing cows feeding on the grasses. The noise in the market area and the green scenery gives a “kampung” feel while delighting in your meal.
Beside the hawker centre are few stalls selling clothing, accessories, jewelleries, biscuits and cookies, and some gadgets. A beauty salon can also be found in the area.
Bukit Gedung is a lower to middle class residential community in Bayan Baru. It was developed in the early 1980s. The area is quite isolated from the other towns in Bayan Baru as it is bordered by Sungai Kluang on the north and the hills of Bukit Gedung on the south.
Within the vicinity, you can find schools, clinics, restaurants, shop lots, banks, a petrol station, a church, mosques, a police station, temples and a fire & rescue station. Other big establishments nearby include Sunshine Square, D’Piazza Mall, Mayang Mall, and Giant Hypermarket. Another hawker centre or food court can be found in the east side of Bukit Gedung, the Kompleks Bukit Gedung, which was built in 2012.
