Pasar Awam Kampung Baru is a local wet and dry market located along Jalan Kampung Baru serving the surrounding community of Kampung Baru in Bukit Mertajam. It is a housed in a two-storey community hall where you can find the wet market section on the ground floor.
The wet market has few stalls for seafood, chicken and beef sections. In a separate one-storey building, you can find many vegetables, fruits, daily products, dry goods and grocery items. In the busy mornings, a few small stalls also line up outside the market selling clothing, toys and other small items.
Vegetarians and organic food lovers will be happy to know that there are several vegetarian food stalls selling soya bean drinks, desserts and Indian and Chinese vegetarian meals. Different stalls are also open to serve local and western foods. Chef Jimmy Wester Food, for example, serves chicken chop, BBQ, chicken, rib eyes steak, black pepper lamb, together with many other options. You may take Rapid Penang Buses No. 709. Alight at the junction of Kampung Baru, in Jalan Kulim and walk about 8 minutes toward the market.
If you are driving from Butterworth, the Bukit Mertajam Market is accessible via Lebuhraya Lingkaran Luar Butterworth (E17) or via Lebuhraya Utara – Selatan/AH2/E1 and then to Route 1. There are parking lots allocated surrounding the market building. But as the market is usually congested in the morning, you may need to park at the roadside nearby.
