The bustling Kuantan Road Market or Pasar Awam Jalan Kuantan is a market that dates to pre WW II and is still serving the community around the Kuantan Road and Dato Keramat area. The Art Deco style building has undergone restoration while at the same time maintaining its original architecture. The market opens early in the morning with stalls spilling up to Dato Keramat Road. It is busiest on weekends as more vendors set up their businesses and shoppers come in droves.
Inside the market, you can find separate sections for seafood, poultry, vegetables and grocery items. They are properly labelled so buyers can easily locate them. The pork section is in a separate semi-closed area on the left side at the back while the chicken and beef are sold on the other side. Aside from the fresh produce, there are also stalls selling dry goods and sundry items. At the main entrance, there are a few stalls selling clothing, shoes and housewares.
Kuantan Road is one of the busiest eating places in George Town. Aside from being delicious, the food here are likewise less pricey compared to other areas in town. There are several coffee shops and restaurants selling a variety of local delights. Two restaurants are located at the corners of Kuantan Road and Dato Kramat Road: Kedai Kopi Lok Yuen and the Timesway Restaurant. In front of the market, you can find a vegetarian restaurant, while farther down you can find another coffee shop.
Spilling on to the road, you will come across stalls selling roasted chicken and duck, wan tan mee, prawn mee, chee chong fun, koay teow and more. You can also find stalls selling fresh coconut, bread and fruit outside the market.
One of the favourite stalls here is the Kuantan Road Ah Ban Curry Mee selling Penang-style white curry noodles. It is located at the junction of Dato Keramat and Kuantan Road outside Timesway Restaurant. It opens in the morning and usually sells out by 11 in the morning.
Another favourite is the Hokkien mee stall located opposite the market. Both these stalls have been in business since the 1960s. Other popular stalls are the Nonya stalls selling kuih, nasi kunyit, kerabu beehoon and nasi ulam.
