Are you looking for wholesale items? Visit the Macallum Street Wholesale Market and you might just find the things you’re looking for. Officially known as Pasar Borong Pulau Mutiara, it is a wholesale market within the market-apartment complex comprising four blocks with 507 units. Located next to the Harbour Trade Centre near the Pengkalan Weld, it is well-known for sale of bulk items particularly food and clothing among others.
This RM62 million project was established as a successor to the century-old Sia Boey wholesale market after its relocation. Sia Boey means “Town’s End” in Hokkien. In the 19th century, George Town was not yet developed and only reached to the Prangin Canal, hence the name.
Most of the vendors in the wholesale market were transferred from the old Sia Boey market. They used to occupy the southern end of Beach Street providing supplementary services to the market activity of Sia Boey. Some were also import and export traders of George Town. Initially, many vendors resisted to move but have relocated later on when the new market was finished.
The entrance to market is on the side of the D’ Orient Mall. At the ground floor, there are sections for the wet market, the wholesale shops and the hawker centre.
On the left side, there are few stalls selling vegetables, fruits, poultry, fish, pork and beef. On the right side, are wholesale sundry goods shops like the Kedai Ubat Looi Chiang Meng, Perniagaan Ban Seng and Eng Ho Seng selling spices and dry goods.
Next to the wet market is the hawker centre where you can find stalls selling koay teow soup, lam mee, tom yam mee and mixed rice. Although there are shops open in the morning, most of them are either closed or empty.
Behind the post office, there is a floral shop selling a variety of flowers at cheaper price. If you have problem with transportation, they can deliver them to you using their lorry.
In the D’ Orient Mall on the side of the market, there is a 24-hour mart, laundry shop, spa, pharmacy, hair treatment centre, beauty products supplier and others. The Olympia College Penang is also housed in the complex.
Along with the wholesale market, the other amenities at Macallum Street Ghaut include the Harbour Trade Centre, a school, community library, a wet market and some Chinese temples.
