Pasar Awam Penaga is a public wet market serving the community in Penaga in Seberang Perai Utara. Strategically located just off Jalan Penaga, this is where the villagers get their fresh produce every morning. There is a big parking area so parking is not really a problem here.
The one-storey open building is spacious and has different sections for seafood, vegetables, beef and chicken. As the area is consisting of mostly Malays, there is no pork being sold here. It opens early in the morning from as early as 6am and closes by noon time or at 3pm on Saturdays. There are stalls that are closed inside the market, but when the market is in session, small stalls selling fruits, kuih, bread, newspapers and household items still spill outside the building. Some vendors display their goods, including fishes, onto the ground. You can find stalls selling clothing, kitchen utensils and other housewares here as well.
Nestled not far away from the wet market is a big food court selling local Malay favourites like Nasi Lemak, Economy Bihun, different types of kuih, Koay Teow Soup, Nasi Ayam, Nasi Melayu, Roti Bakar and more. Enjoy them with your Kopi ‘O’ or any of your favourite beverages while taking your breakfast or brunch, the kampung way. There are also shops selling a variety of clothing, gadgets and even services on the side of the hawker centre.
Next to the food court is the Pusat Komuniti KADUN Penaga or the Community Centre Area Coordinator Legislative Assembly of Penaga. This is where the government performs public works like feedings and other social services. The community centre has badminton courts as well. It also serves as multi-purpose hall for special events and gatherings that can be booked by the public.
In the area surrounding of the market you will find a mini market, primary school, mosque, temple and many business establishments.
Penaga is one of the localities in the North Sebarang Perai (Seberang Perai Utara) on the mainland part of Penang. Nestled to the north of Teluk Air Tawar, it comprises semi-wooden shophouses and traditional or kampung houses lined along Jalan Penaga. As most parts of North Sebarang Perai is covered by green fields, paddy is largely cultivated here.
