Penang Plaza located in Burmah Road is one of the first shopping malls in Penang with a downtown atmosphere, which attracts local urbanites. It comprises a 3-storey podium occupying an area of 60,000sqm. The mall has a lettable area of 91,000sqft and more than 80 parking bays. On top of the mall is a 7-storey office block.
The mall was acquired by the Singapore-based Hotel Royal in 2008. Penang Plaza was originally anchored by FIMA supermarket which operated under different names including Cold Storage. Currently, it is being anchored by Giant Supermarket, which is a crowd favourite together with Guardian Pharmacy on the first floor.
The mall went through a total makeover in 2009 until 2010, giving it a more sophisticated and modern frontage. The interior was also renovated to give a more chic appeal. It now houses more than 40 shops with a mix of local boutiques, hair and nail salons, travel and business services and a restaurant. Another popular is the bookstore at the second floor.
Penang Plaza is conveniently located within the commercial district and is adjacent to Hotel Royal Penang. Parking is available in front and at the back of the mall. Rapid Penang buses stop in front of the Hotel Royal.
The 2 big names welcome shoppers at the ground floor, the Giant Supermarket on the left from the main entrance and the Guardian Pharmacy on the right.
An escalator at the centre of the mall brings you to the first floor, which is tenanted by many local boutiques like Par Is Boutique, Catts Boutique and Bakky Derry Boutique. Located at the hindmost is the Lynn Boutique & Café. Beauty salons are also aplenty here. Jason & Tangs Hair Beauty Salon fronts the first floor, together with other salons like Ray N Mun Hair Salon, Vintage Nails, Eh Hair Salon, De Memoire Hair Studio and Passion Hair Design.
O’Zone Beauty Centre on the other hand offers spa services like facial treatments, waxing and dinner makeup, while MyTriathlonShop sells medical and health products.
Bookzone, a hidden gem for the literarily inclined, has a good collection of books and magazines.
Other shops feature home décor, florist, consultancy services, and optometry services.
Aside from a restaurant, second floor has many shipping and travel agencies like Reliance, Harpers Travel and Abadi Aviation Services.
Hundredfold Enterprise is also here, a retailer/wholesaler of gem stones which also operates a gem-testing laboratory providing services like Diamond Grading and gem testing.
The Shichida Method™, a popular brain development institute from Japan, has a branch here located at the second floor. It offers world class brain stimulation courses and is famous in Singapore and Malaysia as well.
Business offices and additional beauty salon, spa, home décor, and boutique can also be found here.
Second floor is mainly occupied by a fine-dining restaurant, Hei Yeong Seng Chinese Restaurant or otherwise known as Noble Season, which according to reviews, serves delicious authentic Chinese cuisine.
Although Penang Plaza does not have a cinema or amusement centre, shoppers can indulge in the many beauty salons and spa services on the first and second floors.
