Known by the locals as one of Penang’s upper-class market, Pulau Tikus Market caters to the affluent community of Pulau Tikus. Because of this, the prices of goods and commodities tend to be higher compared to other parts of the island. Pulau Tikus market is situated near the Gurney Drive and is frequented by well-to-do locals and foreigners.
The market itself is not very big, but it has most of the things you need for your daily meals. The market building is located along Jalan Pasar but the stalls extend onto Jalan Moulmein making it a busy street especially on weekends. Parking is little challenging as it does get pretty crowded. It is nearby the Pulau Tikus Police Station.
Pulau Tikus Market operates as a wet market from seven in the morning and closes at noon time. It is a complete market where you can find a variety of seafood, poultry, beef, pork, vegetables, fruits and spices for cooking. Clothing, costume jewellery, accessories, Chinese medicine and homewares are also aplenty in this popular market.
Locals like buying fresh produce here. It has a butcher area where you can buy live chickens and have it slaughtered and chopped according to your preference. Expats and foreigners love to explore and try out the hawker foods and experience the local culture of Penang.
It is a favourite among breakfast hunters as there are morning hawker stalls surrounding the market. There are several vendors selling local delights like perut ikan, acar fish, nasi lemak, char koay teow, kerabu beehoon and more. You will be spoiled with many savory and sweet desserts like Nyonya kuih, apom, pulut inti (sticky rice stuffing), putu mayam, putu piring and specialty snacks. Thera are a number of coffee shops where you can find a wide selection of hawker food, including the Sin Hup Aun, 77 Food Yard and Swee Kong.
At night, it transforms into a makeshift hawker centre serving different local delights. Starting at six in the evening, a number of stalls are setup selling hawker food. Among the favourites are the lok lok, duck meat koay teow thng and Indian mee goreng.
Pulau Tikus market has undergone major refurbishment in 2011 which was done in four stages. Renovation included addition of toilets, upgrading of more than 160 stalls and walkways surrounding the market and the modernisation of the hawker centre. The market roof was painted, the floors were cemented, gutters were fitted and work spaces were installed with fresh mosaic. The market was also equipped with new water piping and wiring.
Pulau Tikus market has also been equipped with a Bio-Regen Instant Food Conversion Unit, equipment used to turn food waste into liquid and pipe them into holding tanks. This is done so as part of the government’s zero waste campaign.
