Super Tanker Market is a large marketplace occupying a piece of land along Jalan Nipah. It is named after the Super Tanker Food Court located just across the road. The market is one of the two wet markets serving the residential neighbourhood of Taman Lip Sin, the other one being the Lip Sin Market.
This traditional market is surrounded by parking spaces, which seems not enough due to the huge crowd coming from the market and the food court. It is an open market with no walls. The outer stalls cover the sides with large sheets of tarpaulin which are rolled up or down depending on the heat of the sun.
In front, you can find stalls selling household items, clothing, toys, accessories, gadgets, bags, clocks and different knickknacks. Some are placed on the ground. You will also see stalls selling economy beehoon, breads and dry goods. The centre is bursting with colourful vegetables and fruits.
Located at the back are the meat and seafood sections together with the various spices, traditional medicines and flowers. The pork section is tucked outside at the back of the market.
Not so common in other wet markets, you can find here a stall of organic products, the Goldlife Natural Organic. Another branch can also be found in Jelutong market. There is no hawker centre inside the market as the big food court is just opposite the street near the SMJK Phor Tay School.
The Super Tanker Food Court is one of the biggest eating places in Penang. It is frequented by shoppers from the wet market and residents in the vicinity. It is usually full to the brink in the mornings especially on weekends. At night, working residents and families also gather here for dinner.
The hawker centre opens at 8am to 12 noon and again from 6pm to 11.30pm. It offers an immense selection of hawker food. Some of the favourites here are the Char Koay Teow, Curry Mee, Chee Chong Fun, Lam Mee, Curry Chicken, Bee Hoon Soup, Ban Jian Kuih or Apam Balik. Consumers also rave about the Oyster Porridge and the Chicken and Duck Rice. Many of the stalls here are owned and operated by locals while some are foreigners.
