Taman Free School Market is a busy market in the middle of housing flats A, B, C and D in the Taman Free School, Penang. It looks like a makeshift market comprising mixed stalls selling fresh produce and hawker foods. The market extends until the roadside beside block E, and the shoppers park at the roadside as well, congesting the road.
There is no main entrance into the market. You can start at the walkway behind flat A and you will already see the vendors selling eggs, spices, dried seafood and fish balls. On the other side, there are stalls selling homewares. There is a line of stalls selling chicken and towards the corner, a variety of fruits. In the middle section, you can buy fresh fishes and seafood. There’s also a whole line of stalls selling more vegetables. Pork meats are on the other side opposite of the chicken stalls.
At the back, there are a few hawker stalls selling local favourites like Noodle Soup and Koay Teow Th’ng. Outside the centre market on the roadside, there is a newspaper stall with other retail items like breads and drinks. Scattered are small stalls selling toys, socks and personal items. There is another set of hawker stalls lined up on the roadside selling Chee Chong Fan, variety of kuih, Hokkien Mee, Apom, Lam Mee, different types of breads and Siew Pau.
In the next street, more hawkers are sure to fulfil your appetite with more local delights. There are a few stalls selling fresh flowers, biscuits, clothes, and more vegetables! It’s like a never ending line of stalls selling fresh produce and groceries.
Surely, this wet market makes staying for the occupants of the flats here more convenient, except of course, for the traffic jam and the early morning noise it causes in the morning. With so many residents in the area, this Taman Free School Market is really bustling with food and people.
Aside from the wet market, there are also a hair salon, a few mini markets selling kitchen utensils and almost all your house needs.
If the hawker stalls are not enough, there is a big food court at the roundabout, the Taman Free School Food Court. Along Jalan Terengganu, there are many business establishments, clinics and more restaurants!
