Yoga

Yoga is a group of mental, physical and spiritual disciplines that originated in ancient India. There is a variety of practices of yoga but the most common and popular is the Hatha Yoga. In Vedic Sanskrit, yoga means to join, or combine or unite. The other derivations of the word means “concentration” or to concentrate. Yoga means the union of the individual consciousness with the universal consciousness, the union of soul and spirit. The ultimate goal of yoga is liberation.

According to the Bhagavad Gita, a 700-verse Hindu scripture, Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self. It teaches you how to listen to your body and be curious about who you are.

Yoga is more than just physical exercise; it has a reflective and spiritual essence. The stretching, twisting and turning are just but superficial aspects yoga. Rather, it unfolds the infinite potentials of the mind and soul. It is believed that when you are in harmony with yourself, the journey through life becomes happier, more peaceful and more fulfilled.

More than we know it, we have been using Yoga all our lives. Yoga moves like Cat Stretch strengthens our spine, the Easy pose relieves anxiety, and the Wind Relieving pose boosts digestion.

Penang has numerous yoga studios and schools offering different types of yoga classes and yoga therapies. Aside from the yoga classes, these institutions also offer workshops, retreats and training courses for yoga teacher wannabes. So inhale. Exhale. Be calm and do Yoga.
